Electric cars are increasingly becoming popular as more awareness is created on global warming and ozone depletion. More and more companies are venturing into the manufacture of these Eco-friendly automobiles, but are they worth shifting to or you’d rather stick to your gas engine car? That’s what we want to find out in this article.
With the growing concerns regarding climate change & global warming, electric cars are proving to be a great alternative to gas engines, which release toxic emissions from the burning fuel. Electric cars, on the other hand, are very Eco-friendly; they don’t burn any fuel, so there are no emissions.
Many manufacturers are also going green on other aspects of production. For example, Nissan Leaf is manufactured using green recycled materials. Ford Focus Electric takes the same approach. Also, electric vehicles are cheaper to manage and maintain. For every kilometer covered by a gasoline engine, EVs will consume a third in electricity costs. That is to say, EVs are 60% cheaper to run compared to gasoline engine cars. From research, the charging costs of an EV driven the entire year for around 15,000 miles is approximately $540, which is actually less than what you will pay for fuel when driving the same distance with a gas engine car. When it comes to maintenance, electric vehicles are cheaper to maintain because they have lesser moving parts. There is no oil change or spark plugs to replace.
On the downside, electric cars are quite expensive. So, while the running costs may attract you, remember the expensive initial cost. A simple car like the Nissan Leaf will set you back close to $33,000, without insurance and sales tax. Also, they require periodic battery replacement, and getting these batteries may set you back up to $10,000. There’s also the inconvenience of long charging time, but with proper planning, this shouldn’t be a major worry. Some of the latest models like the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt have a generous 200 miles range per single charge.
Even though electric vehicles are expensive, they are the future of transportation. Besides the benefits of zero emissions, the running costs are also lower. If you are conscious about environmental protection, go green with electric cars and enjoy a clean, breathable atmosphere.
